The first semester has proven to be challenging for me. The course of my choice was Psychology due to my aspirations of working in mental health and helping patients in the future. The course itself is competitive, and the learning curve from GCE to University level turned out to be a huge jump. I found the university environment to be also rather different to that of 6th form, whereby education relies on independence, and although I consider myself to be an independent person when it comes to learning, this was still a new experience for me and I still have lots to grasp.
The first few weeks of university brought about unwelcoming health problems. I have battled similar issues in the past and although then recovered, they struck back and persist until today. The bursary has helped me to fund transport in order to arrive to many appointments across the city and in the last week I have managed to secure treatment for myself, which I thank the JVENN foundation for. I am hoping to recover quickly so that I can get back to education as I have fallen back on my progress.
The funds have also supported me in my caring role for my brother. It meant that I could support him in the time of crisis and arrive to appointments with him so now he finally has enough support from another team in the NHS. I am no longer needed to be there for him as often, which helps me to direct my attention on my own recovery and education. I am looking forward to the next semester, as although this one had its ups and down, I can plan for the future to improve my academic progress and I am optimistic about my recovery in order to get there.
Although university is challenging, I believe that with recovery I will succeed at the end of the year and beyond and I have no doubt that the help from JVENN will greatly assist me into achieving a degree I always desired to have. I am very grateful for John’s help and the rest of the team as the funds have been very useful to me in difficult times and reduced my worries massively.
With great thanks to the JVENN foundation,
Dagmara
