Rhiannon's Second Semester

Posted 9th February 2017

I am two weeks into the second semester, I have realised my time at university will pass me by very quickly after already completing numerous assignments and exams. During semester one I was finding it difficult to adapt to the university life style as I had not met many friends on my course, because I am doing a split degree my modules are halved between English and law therefore I am surrounded by new people constantly. Although after a few weeks I met some lovely people from all different parts of Yorkshire and it was nice to hear their reasons for coming to study at Hull.
In terms of the work load on my course I have been keeping very up to date and have managed to keep in the same routine I had at college in relation to getting work done in advance so I could meet deadlines. It was very strange revising for exams throughout November and December in preparation for the exam in January as this was not the case when taking A levels. However when it came to taking my exam after Christmas I was very pleased with the paper and I am confident I will have done well. University is definitely very different to any other study I have done before and it is difficult to adapt to, I was worried my lecturers and tutors where not going to be as supportive as my teachers in college, however I have found great support from them, especially with their office hours which gives me time to go see them with any problems I may have.
During the Christmas break I spent time making sure I was organised for the start of semester two and I had many more books to purchase in preparation for the new modules which I have now started. I am now studying drama, poetry and law. I can say I am enjoying the English side of my degree more as I love to read and I am learning about plays which I have not studied or even heard of before so it’s great to expand my knowledge of literature. I am still amazed by the library at the University of Hull, especially the English floor.
The law side to my degree is very different to the English modules and set up of the lectures and seminars. The criminal law module from the first semester was very similar to the work I have done at A level which helped and paced me at an advantage in relation to the exam and the assignments. I am excited to see what areas of law I am going to be studying next, hopefully something I have not covered before as I found the work slightly repetitive.
At the start of January I went back to Wyke College for an awards event, I was awarded the principles award which made me feel accomplished and proud of how far I have come. I felt determined to make use of the time I have at University to ensure I use all my efforts to try and finish with a first class degree. I always try and encourage people that University is a great opportunity to pursue your chosen career as I believe I am expanding my knowledge and experiences which will help me in later life. I believe the University of Hull and the degree I have chosen is the correct decision and will help me get to where I want to be. I have many people to which I am grateful towards for their support and encouragement and the JVenn Foundation is certainly one of them.
