Abby's first few days away from home

Before starting university I had many different expectations of what it may hold and I was so excited to move and start a new adventure however once I moved to Birmingham to study psychology and counselling it was a very different experience from what I expected. As soon as my parents left me to go back home I just felt so isolated and alone especially since I knew no one in Birmingham. Even though I knew everybody was in the same boat I just felt so alone as I was in a new city, with new people, and new classes, everything had just changed overnight. For the first few weeks, all I wanted to do was come home and see my friends and family, and the funding provided by the JVenn foundation allowed me to travel back more than I would of otherwise. After a few weeks here I started to make friends both in my accommodation and on my course and I really started to settle into the uni life, and I believe that’s because I didn’t have to cut off completely from my family with the help of JVenn. As well as this the money provided allowed me to buy a laptop which has really helped me on my course when it comes to presentations and coursework as well as allowing me to have easier contact with my family and friends as I was able to video call them often. It also allowed me to buy various different things for my accommodation which made my room feel more like home which further helped me with my homesickness at the start of the year.
